NFPA 10 defines selection, installation, inspection, maintenance, recharging, and testing requirements. The Ontario Fire Code (O. Reg. 213/07) adopts and references NFPA 10 for commercial buildings in Ontario. TSSA regulations apply to high-pressure cylinders for hydrostatic testing facility licensing, and CSA standards apply to specific extinguisher types.

What extinguisher classes does my building need?

Class A: ordinary combustibles such as wood, paper, cloth, and plastics.
Class B: flammable liquids such as gasoline, oil, and paint thinners.
Class C: energized electrical equipment.
Class D: combustible metals such as magnesium, sodium, and lithium, for specialized applications only.
Class K: commercial cooking fires involving combustible oils and fats.

A low-pressure or out-of-spec unit is swapped for a service loaner, recharged at our facility, and returned. Damaged or expired units are quoted for replacement. A unit that is the wrong class for its hazard is flagged and swapped. Buildings with larger inventories receive a complete inventory list with each annual service, showing the status of every unit and upcoming service intervals.

Annual inspection is an external check of pressure, weight, condition, and tag. 6-year maintenance is an internal examination of stored-pressure extinguishers, which requires depressurizing the cylinder and inspecting the inside for corrosion or component wear.

What is hydrostatic testing and why is it required?+

Hydrostatic testing pressurizes the cylinder with water to verify it can safely contain the design pressure. It is mandatory at intervals defined by NFPA 10 because cylinders can develop corrosion or fatigue over time that is not visible from outside.

What happens to my extinguishers during service?+

Extinguishers needing recharge, internal maintenance, or hydrostatic testing are removed and replaced with service loaners so your building maintains coverage. The original units return to site after service at our facility.

Can I replace a fire extinguisher myself?+

Mounting a new unit is straightforward, but the unit needs to be the correct class and rating for the hazard, and the location needs to comply with NFPA 10 spacing and accessibility requirements. We recommend an initial consultation with a certified technician before swapping units yourself.

What is the typical life of a commercial fire extinguisher?+

A well-maintained dry chemical extinguisher typically lasts 12 to 15 years before replacement becomes more economical than continued service. CO2 extinguishers can last longer with proper hydrostatic testing.
